SANIA MANIA!!!
July 14, 2008
People say Sania has brought a refreshment and attention to the world of Indian Tennis. I would say ‘IT WAS TRUE’.
Sania did shine by becoming the first Indian women to reach the 4th round of US open, reaching the top 30 in world rankings etc. For kids in India, Sania is their role model. But, if you have been observing her game for the past one or two years, it is obvious that she has failed to improve herself.
Also, the media is not doing justice to the other Tennis stars (and other players too) by giving undue attention to her. I feel that Sania doesnt completely deserve such HYPE. In a press conference athlete P.T. Usha said, “Sania is not receiving such attention JUST for her game” True… For instance, players like Saina nehwal, Joshna chinnappa, Prakash Amirtaraj or Anju Bobby George etc have also acheived in their respective fields, but seldom do you get to read some article on them. Media should stop giving excessive HYPE to Sania Mirza, lest she blames the media for her poor performance too! (It will happen in the near future)
I am sick of hearing or reading Sania’s post-match / pre-match comments. If you have read or heard some of these, you would get irritated for sure. It would go like this:
“I had a broken arm/wrist/ blah blah blah… It is a great miracle (!) that I am standing in front of you and playing. I would be more than astonished if I win this game/ for winning this game. Though my body doesnt co-operate, my spirits are in high energy…”
I do understand that she is injury-prone. But, it is not at all fair to blame your health for each and every defeat. I would say, if she is so not well, let her take a break from tennis for 6 months or one year or till she completely recovers from all this injury crap.
Also, fitness is vital for any sport and it is her responsibility to keep herself fit.
Note: If you had got a chance to see Sania’s games in Wimbledon, you would have noticed her SERVE. Unless Sania works on her fitness, SERVE and Unforced errors, she cannot achieve more. All that she could do is that, blame her health or tennis racket or media or the fans or even the stars for her failure…
Now, the latest comedy is that SANIA IS KEEN TO WIN A GOLD IN THE OLYMPICS. Though, my heart wants her to win, my head says that, it is not even possible in her wildest dreams. It is obvious that, after her loss, she ll blame either her fitness or the people of INDIA (for having high expectations on her!!!)

PS: If you had correctly spotted that the picture I had added conveys that she is facing a downfall now, KUDOS to you…

The immediate thought that struck me when I read your article was Tendulkar. I may not be perfectly right but I’ve noticed quite a number of times that he either misses matches or does not do well due to injuries. I know players get injured but it seems to me that Tendulkar gets injured/affected more. Can you explain this?

Oh my god!!! Sri, how can u ever compare GOD with Sania…
Please understand, Sachin has been the backbone of Indian cricket for over 16 years… for a particular period, if Sachin gets out, India would lose and such was the scenario.
See, the amount of cricket he has played (from the age of 16!!!) till date is something AMAZING!!
But, Sania is playing only for the past say 4 or 5 years…
Also, Sachin, though nowadays, more prone to injury, has NEVER EVER LOST his game.., The recent Australian series is an example. We won the one day series 2-0, mailny coz’ of SACHIN.
Also, he has never ever gave excuses like SANIA…
PLEASEEEEEEEEEE never ever compare GOD with SANIA

@ sriram
Again, missing matches coz of injury is not at all wrong. but, one cannot keep on giving excuses… Sachin has never blamed his health for his form…

I haven’t tried to compare both. It just struck me that Tendulkar is probably not as good as what his followers tell.

Well…nice observation…he watched her wimbledon match..having won the first set, and lost the seond…the 3rd was hers…she should have won it 6-4 but played so very badly to lose 6-7…
Be it any profession, looks do play an important…there may be so many ppl around saying talent is important…beauty is no criteria.. but lets b practical, beauty is an icing on the cake and thats wa s making the press give Sania the undue attention…nice post..
P.S: My blog updated

its obvious that sports persons are prone to injuries.but blaming the health for a poor performance is acceptable only to a certain extent. sania has been doing well in her nascent years. i think she is not mentally prepared to face both victory as well as defeat. often she becomes tensed in critical situations. also she was pestered a lot by people from her religion for her dress. also she is more concerned about her past injuries this slows her down.
it will be better that she stays aloof from the media for sometime. and the people should learn to encourage rising stars. the media should be responsible for hyping her so much.the same was with yuvraj singh. where they held him so high when he was doing well and literally throwing down when he was not at his best.

@ Guga
thanks for ur comment… Its not like I dont like Sania and all… I dont like people blaming health for each and every defeat…
I would be one of the happiest tennis fans, when Sania plays to her potential and brings glory…

Yes very true! Sania is on a downfall right now, and she is in news for all the wrong reasons (linkages with actors etc.). She is overrated. People like GM Vishwanathan Anand and GM Sasikiran don’t garner as many accolades for winning as she gets brickbats for losing. And somehow she has an excuse each time?
